Ryde at 54 St James Street is an independent bicycle café and professional cycle repair workshop. Founded in 2016, the venue combines third-wave speciality coffee and cooked brunches with an open workshop where cyclists can have their bikes serviced, tuned or repaired while enjoying a flat white.

What Ryde does

The space caters equally to commuter cyclists, leisure riders, local creative studio workers, and non-cycling café enthusiasts. Cyclists are invited to wheel their bicycles straight through the wide front doors into secure indoor parking racks while placing an order. The atmosphere is unhurried, community-minded and open, featuring tall floor-to-ceiling windows, plywood and industrial steel furnishings, cycling photography, and spacious communal tables popular with laptop workers and freelancers.

The professional cycle workshop

In the rear corner of the café, professional mechanics operate a fully equipped bicycle servicing and repair station:

  • Same-Day Servicing: Gear indexing, brake cable adjustments, hydraulic disc brake bleeding, bottom bracket replacements, and chain lubrication.
  • Puncture and Tyre Fixes: Quick tube replacements, tubeless tyre setups, and wheel truing while you drink coffee.
  • Full Overhauls: Deep strip-downs, bearing repacking, headset overhauls, and custom component builds for road, gravel, mountain, and commuter bikes.
  • Essential Gear: A curated retail wall stocked with replacement inner tubes, tyre levers, mini pumps, high-grade chain lubes, cycling socks, and musette bags.

The kitchen: All-day brunch and Allpress coffee

The coffee bar pours beans roasted by Allpress Espresso, prepared on a precision espresso machine alongside single-origin batch-brew drip filter and iced coffees. The food menu is made to order until 3:00pm:

  • Buttermilk Pancake Stacks: Fluffy American-style pancakes served with crispy smoked streaky bacon and Canadian maple syrup, or seasonal berry compote with Greek yoghurt.
  • Eggs and Breakfast Buns: Creamy soft-scrambled eggs on buttered toasted sourdough with choices of grilled halloumi, avocado, or bacon; and breakfast brioche rolls.
  • Artisan Sourdough Toasties: Golden grilled sandwiches including salt beef pastrami with Swiss cheese and gherkins, or mature cheddar with caramelised onion jam.
  • Pastries and Bakes: Fresh morning croissants, cinnamon buns, flapjacks, and vegan traybakes supplied by independent Liverpool bakers.

The story behind Ryde and its 2026 relocation

Ryde was established in 2016 in the historic red-brick brewing sheds of Cains Brewery Village, later moving to the Northern Lights creative complex on Mann Street. In early 2026, seeking greater accessibility and street visibility, the business relocated to 54 St James Street, taking over a spacious ground-floor unit inside the contemporary eco-headquarters of The Women’s Organisation.

The new location positions Ryde directly along one of Liverpool's busiest cycle commuter corridors, connecting the residential areas of Dingle and Toxteth with the commercial city centre.
