Homebaked is a community-owned co-operative bakery and café at 197-199 Oakfield Road in Anfield, situated directly opposite the Kop stand of Anfield Stadium. Born out of a grassroots community campaign to save a historic neighbourhood bakery from municipal demolition, the enterprise is celebrated nationally for its award-winning handmade pies, artisan breads, and social-value business model.
What Homebaked does
The bakery operates as both a culinary destination and a vital neighbourhood anchor. On matchdays, the shop is famous for football queues that stretch down Oakfield Road as thousands of home and visiting supporters line up for hot handmade pies. During the rest of the week, the venue functions as an affordable, welcoming community living room where local residents, pensioners, and schoolchildren gather for freshly baked bread, cooked breakfasts, warm lunches, and cups of tea.
Homebaked is structured as a non-profit workers' co-operative. Every penny of operating surplus is reinvested directly into creating secure living-wage jobs for local Anfield residents, running community baking workshops, and funding the neighbouring Homebaked Community Land Trust to develop affordable housing along Oakfield Road.
Award-winning pies: The Shankly and Scouse
Homebaked is recognized as one of the premier pie makers in the United Kingdom, consistently taking home gold and silver medals at the annual British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray. Every pie is hand-crimped on-site using crisp, golden shortcrust bases and flaky puff pastry lids:
- The Shankly Pie: Named in honour of legendary Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly. Packed with slow-braised prime British beef steak, smoked bacon, button mushrooms, and rich, peppery meat gravy.
- The Traditional Scouse Pie: Liverpool’s maritime stew encased in pastry: tender slow-simmered beef, diced potatoes, carrots and onions cooked in a savoury broth.
- The Vegan Shankly: An award-winning plant-based champion that swaps beef for earthy pan-fried mushrooms, lentils and a deeply seasoned vegetable reduction, earning accolades from vegans and meat eaters alike.
- Chicken and Bacon: Succulent diced chicken breast and smoked bacon in a velvety cream sauce with fresh herbs.
- Cheese and Onion: Mature Lancashire cheddar melted with slow-caramelised onions and diced potato.
Artisan breads, breakfast rolls and sweet bakes
Baking begins in the early hours of the morning, producing traditional crusty white bloomers, wholemeal loaves, and sourdough rounds. At the breakfast counter, staff serve soft morning baps filled with thick-cut bacon, Cumberland sausages, and fried free-range eggs.
The sweet counter celebrates northern bakery heritage, stocked daily with towering vanilla custard slices, traditional Manchester tarts with raspberry jam and toasted coconut, chocolate brownies, and Eccles cakes.
The story behind 197-199 Oakfield Road
For more than a century, the premises operated as Mitchell’s Bakery, a family business that fed generations of Anfield families. In 2010, amid controversial Housing Market Renewal (Pathfinder) council schemes that saw hundreds of surrounding Victorian terraced homes boarded up, Mitchell’s was forced to close its doors.
Refusing to let the historic community hub be demolished, local residents joined with artist Jeanne van Heeswijk as part of the 2010 to 2012 Liverpool Biennial. They formed a community cooperative, learned commercial baking from retired master bakers, refurbished the derelict shop, and reopened Homebaked in October 2013. Today, the bakery stands as one of the UK’s most inspiring examples of community-led urban regeneration.
