Wavertree and Smithdown: Everyday Places to Eat
Choose where to eat around Wavertree and Smithdown Road, with current links for breakfast, lunch, pizza, dinner and practical advice for the route.
If you are eating around Wavertree or Smithdown, choose the right part of the road before you leave. Smithdown Road is long, and “somewhere near Penny Lane” is how a quick meal becomes a long walk.
The useful pattern is simple: cafés and breakfast towards the Penny Lane end, restaurants and bars through the middle stretch, then Wavertree's everyday shops and takeaways beyond it.
Where to eat, by time of day
- Bean There and Tavern Co cover breakfast, brunch or lunch.
- Little Furnace is evening pizza, not a lunchtime plan.
- Belzan is for booked dinner or Sunday lunch.
- Check the exact address and kitchen hours before travelling.
- Keep a backup on the same part of Smithdown Road.
Breakfast and lunch near Penny Lane
Tavern Co at 621–625 Smithdown Road serves breakfast from the morning into the afternoon, then changes to its later menu. The official site lists the current split between breakfast, dinner and bar hours.
Bean There at 376 Smithdown Road serves coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch. The business also has a bakery on Rose Lane, so check that your map is taking you to the Smithdown branch.
Both are useful for daytime food, but weekend queues and student-term traffic can change the pace. Check before setting out if you have a fixed appointment afterwards.
Pizza in the evening
Little Furnace on Smithdown Road serves wood-fired pizza and publishes separate opening hours for its Smithdown restaurant and Baltic Market stall.
The Smithdown site currently opens in the late afternoon, so it is not a quick-lunch recommendation. The venue asks customers who need its house-made gluten-free dough to contact the restaurant in advance.
Dinner and Sunday lunch at Belzan
Belzan at 371 Smithdown Road is a small neighbourhood bistro and wine bar. Its menu changes with the seasons.
The official site currently lists dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and Sunday lunch. Booking is the sensible approach; do not turn up at noon on a weekday because an old article called it a lunch spot.
Wavertree beyond the restaurant list
Wavertree is used for ordinary meals as much as planned nights out. Along and around Smithdown Road you will find supermarkets, bakeries, takeaways, pubs and cafés serving people who live, study and work nearby.
That makes the area useful, but it also makes fixed “best of” lists date quickly. A current menu and an open kitchen matter more than an old award or a copied price.
Getting there
Several bus routes use parts of Smithdown Road, but stopping patterns and diversions change. Use the Merseytravel Journey Planner with the venue's postcode.
Mossley Hill and Wavertree Technology Park stations serve different sides of the wider area; neither is a universal shortcut for Smithdown Road. Check the full walking leg before choosing rail.

- Book small restaurants when the official site recommends it.
- Allow extra time on student move-in weekends and major matchdays.
- Choose another nearby venue if the first is full rather than crossing South Liverpool.
