Bold Street is the simplest place to start if you want independent Liverpool shops within one compact walk. You can cover books, gifts, clothes, records and art materials without leaving the city centre.
Shop line-ups change faster than old Liverpool guides admit. Use this route as a starting point, then check each business before making a special trip.
The Bold Street shopping route
- Start near Liverpool Central and walk uphill along Bold Street.
- Use the side streets around Slater Street and Wood Street for records, clothes and specialist shops.
- Add the Bluecoat for contemporary craft and work by independent makers.
- Visit the Baltic Triangle only if you have time for a separate walk.
Start on Bold Street
Bold Street rises from the Liverpool Central end towards St Luke's Church. The slope is steady and the pavements get crowded at weekends, so start early if you want time to browse.
News from Nowhere
News from Nowhere at 96 Bold Street is a not-for-profit workers' co-operative bookshop. It stocks political writing, fiction, local history and children's books. The shop has traded since 1974, though it moved premises before reaching its current address.
Shared Earth
Shared Earth at 71 Bold Street sells Fairtrade and ethically sourced gifts, homeware and accessories. Its own shop page warns that opening hours can change, so check before travelling.
Utility
Utility at 86 Bold Street covers design-led gifts, cards and homeware. It is useful when you need a present rather than a long browse through vintage stock.
Zap Graffiti
Zap Graffiti operates from the first floor of Resurrection at 27-29 Bold Street. It sells art materials and runs bookable classes. Check the access arrangements if stairs are a problem.
Slater Street and Wood Street for a second loop
Turn into the Ropewalks for record shops, vintage clothing and specialist retailers. Businesses here can sit above ground-floor units or inside shared buildings, so a street-level glance will miss some of them.

Add the Bluecoat for contemporary craft
The Bluecoat sits on School Lane, near the lower end of Bold Street. Its independent retailers include the Bluecoat Display Centre, which sells ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass and other work by contemporary makers.
The Bluecoat publishes current retailer and access information on its visitor page. Add it at the start or end of the Bold Street walk rather than treating it as a separate neighbourhood.
Extend the walk to the Baltic Triangle only if needed
Cains Brewery Village and nearby warehouses contain markets, studios and small businesses, but the tenant mix changes. Check the place you want on its own site or social page before walking down.
