Hope Street and the Georgian Quarter: A Local Guide

Hope Street gives you a clear walk between Liverpool's two cathedrals, with theatres, the Philharmonic and Georgian terraces along the way. Allow two hours for the street and one side-street loop, or longer if you go inside a venue.

Start at the Metropolitan Cathedral and finish at Liverpool Cathedral if you want the easier direction. Check both cathedrals before travelling because services and events can limit visitor access.

The Georgian Quarter walking route

• Start at the Metropolitan Cathedral, then walk south along Hope Street.
• Rodney Street, Falkner Square and Canning Street make one short Georgian Quarter loop.
• Book ahead for a performance, but check same-day access for churches and museums.
• Wear shoes that suit slopes, paving and cobbled side streets.

Start at the Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral visitor page lists current opening information. Walk around the circular interior if access is available, then leave by the main entrance and join Hope Street.

The Victoria Gallery & Museum is close by on Ashton Street. Add it only if its opening hours fit your day; it is a separate stop rather than part of the straight cathedral route.

Use the middle of Hope Street for a break

The Everyman and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall sit on the central stretch. Their cafes, bars and public areas follow venue schedules, so check before treating either as a guaranteed daytime stop.

This part of the walk also has restaurants and pubs. If you have an evening booking, arrive early and walk the street before the performance rather than crossing the city twice.

Take one loop through the Georgian Quarter

Rodney Street, Canning Street and Falkner Square show the residential scale of the Georgian Quarter. Choose one loop and return to Hope Street. Covering every side street adds distance without improving the route.

The pavements vary and some side streets have cobbles. Stay on Hope Street if access, rain or limited time makes the detour awkward.

Finish at Liverpool Cathedral

Continue past Upper Duke Street to Liverpool Cathedral. The cathedral publishes visitor access, service times and tower information on its own site.

The grounds and St James' Gardens give you space to finish the walk. The gardens sit below street level, so allow for steps or use the accessible route shown by the cathedral.

A two-hour Hope Street route

1. Check access and enter the Metropolitan Cathedral.
2. Walk down Hope Street past the Everyman and Philharmonic Hall.
3. Loop through Rodney Street and Falkner Square.
4. Return to Hope Street and finish at Liverpool Cathedral.
